Cavity prevention

Fluoride treatment: enamel-strengthening, in two minutes.

Fluoride is the most-studied cavity prevention tool in dentistry. A quick in-office treatment after your cleaning can dramatically lower your risk of new decay over the next year.

Fluoride works by binding into the surface of your tooth enamel, replacing weaker mineral structures with a more acid-resistant compound called fluorapatite. The result: teeth that are harder for cavity-causing bacteria to attack, and that re-mineralize more readily after the everyday acid exposures from food and drink.

Most kids should get professional fluoride treatment at every cleaning — it’s one of the cheapest, most effective preventive tools we have. Adults at higher cavity risk benefit too: dry-mouth from medications, ongoing orthodontic work, frequent snackers, gum recession that exposes root surfaces, or anyone with a history of multiple cavities in recent years.

The in-office treatment takes about two minutes. We apply a varnish or foam to your teeth after your cleaning; you skip food and drink for thirty minutes afterward and resume normal eating after that. There’s no needle, no discomfort, and no aftercare beyond skipping breakfast for a half-hour.

Patients who are doing well with low cavity risk usually don’t need extra fluoride beyond what’s in their toothpaste. We’ll be honest about whether you actually need it.
