Dental emergencies — what to do, what to expect.
What counts as a dental emergency?
Severe toothache, a broken or knocked-out tooth, a lost crown or filling, swelling in the gum or jaw, bleeding that won't stop, or any injury to your mouth from a fall or accident. If you're not sure whether it qualifies, call us at 540-414-8423 and describe what's going on. We'd rather you call and find out than wait.
Can you see me today?
Most days, yes. We hold same-day emergency slots during clinical hours (Mon–Fri, 8AM–5PM) specifically so our Stuarts Draft patients don't have to drive to a hospital ER for tooth pain. Call as early in the day as you can — the earlier you reach us, the more likely we can fit you in before lunch.
What should I do if a tooth gets knocked out?
Pick it up by the crown (the white part), not the root. Rinse it gently with milk or saline if it's dirty, then try to place it back in the socket. If that's not possible, store it in a small container of milk and call us immediately. A knocked-out tooth has the best chance of being saved if it's reimplanted within an hour.
How much does an emergency dental visit cost?
An emergency exam plus any necessary X-rays is usually in the range of $150 to $250, depending on what's needed. Treatment is separate and depends on the diagnosis. We give you a clear estimate before doing anything, and Virginia Dental Club members get a meaningful discount on both the exam and the treatment.
What if I have an emergency after hours or on the weekend?
Call 540-414-8423 and follow the prompts. For life-threatening symptoms — uncontrolled bleeding, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or a serious facial injury — go to the nearest emergency room. For most dental emergencies, you can manage with ibuprofen and a cold compress until our office opens the next business day.
