Preventive care

Cleanings and exams that catch problems early.

The single most important thing you can do for your teeth is keep your six-month appointment. Routine cleanings and exams are how we keep small problems from turning into big ones.

A typical cleaning visit takes about 45 to 60 minutes. Your hygienist will measure the depth of your gum pockets, remove plaque and tartar above and below the gum line, polish your teeth to remove surface stains, and floss everything thoroughly. If you’ve been told you have a strong gag reflex or sensitive areas, let her know — small adjustments make a big difference.

Your exam is just as important as the cleaning. Dr. Weatherwax checks every tooth for new decay or wear, looks at every existing filling and crown for breakdown, examines your gums and bite, and screens for oral cancer at the same time. Digital X-rays are taken when they’re due — usually once a year for bitewings, less often for full mouth series.

After the exam, you’ll hear plainly what’s going on. If something needs follow-up work, we’ll explain why, what it costs, and what happens if you wait. No pressure, no upselling. Most visits end with “everything looks good, see you in six months.”

Patients with a history of gum disease usually move to a three- or four-month recall instead of six. We’ll talk through that schedule with you if it applies.
